2010 CES Breaks Records and Generates Opportunities for Global Growth
The Electronics Technicians Association, International was a proud participant in the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. CES stayed true to its tradition of being the largest tradeshow for consumer technology with more than 120,000 industry professionals and a record 330 new exhibitors among the 2,500 overall exhibitors. The show unveiled several new products and innovative ideas including 3D TV, mobile DTV, connected TV, green technologies, tablets and apps.
"This was the 7th CES that I have attended and every year I am amazed by the enthusiasm of the attendees and the exhibitors, yes the gadgets and electronics are amazing, but the energy of the crowds is infectious and brings excitement for everyone, technicians, educators and consumers for the coming year," said Scott Bachrach, CETma, ETA International Chairman.

In addition to groundbreaking gadgets, the CES featured dynamic keynote addresses from industry leaders including Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, Ford’s Alan Mulally, Intel’s Paul Otellini, Nokia’s Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Qualcomm’s Dr. Paul Jacobs and Hisense’s Zhou Houjian.
Keynote Highlights:
Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft Corporation, keynote address focused on the importance of changing screens for the television and PC, cloud computing across multiple platforms and the evolving natural user interface. Ballmer, along with Ryan Asdourian, senior product manager for Windows, showed off a wide variety of innovative Windows 7-compatible PCs, software and gaming.
Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo addressed technology’s impact on developing economies. Kallasvuo stated that his own belief and message to the global industry is to “do good business by doing good.” Kallasvuo introduced how Nokia technology in emerging countries has increased access to weather and crop prices, is able to order products from other areas of the world and can transfer money to relatives far away. Kallasvuo also announced the Growth Economy Venture Challenge, which Nokia, partnering with Sesame Street, launched as part of their Calling All Innovators program (www.callingallinnovators.com). This international contest will award a one million dollar investment for the winning innovation – which could be a new technology or an application designed specifically to improve lives globally.
Qualcomm CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs took the stage to talk about convergence in the wireless world, health care and FLO TV. Jacobs noted that “wireless has the power to change our lives for the better,” by having all devices linked together and driving growth and innovation across the world. During the keynote, Jacobs showcased Qualcomm's new Snapdragon processing chip, which was displayed in the Lenovo Skylight smartbook. Mirasol, which will bring color and video capable display technology to eReaders and smartbooks, and was also featured on stage. Jacobs then highlighted Qualcomm's N-Stream technology, which manages digital entertainment in the home with a dual-band wireless LAN connection. Qualcomm also announced that FLO TV will soon be coming to the iPhone and iTouch.
Hisense Chairman Zhou Houjian made history by becoming the first leader of a Chinese company to deliver a keynote at CES. During his address, Zhou discussed how Hisense progressed from a small regional company 40 years ago to a global multibillion dollar conglomerate by always looking to the future with a clear vision, sound strategy, efficient organization and innovative technology. Hisense has become a household brand in China consisting of four segments: consumer electronics, home appliances, communications and information technology.
Major innovations creating a buzz from CES included the Android OS, Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 Hybrid, Microsoft's Project Natal and Sprint's 4G network.
“The 2010 CES featured a record number of new exhibit areas on the show floor highlighting cutting-edge technology trends that will redefine our industry,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, events and conferences, CEA.
Added this year to CES - world-changing technologies, whether benefiting the environment, utilizing new forms of sustainable energy, renewing our resources, or contributing to the development of nations both on and off the grid.
Sustainable Planet featured more than 30 exhibitors across 5,500 net square feet of exhibit space. Companies included Bits Ltd., Electronics Recycling Coordination Clearinghouse, Embertec Power Savings Technologies, Goal 0, Greenpeace, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, Meadwestvaco, Miniwiz, PowerGenix, Sean Energy Inc. and Solio.
In addition to the overflowing exhibit halls and keynotes, CES offered more than 250 conference sessions throughout the four days.
The popular Last Gadget Standing SuperSession hosted by Robin Raskin, has been a CES favorite for nine years. The standing room-only session featured 10 finalists vying to win over the audience with their four-minute product demos. The winner was The Boxee Box by D-Link – an open-source media player with integrated social networking features and a large selection of online content. The online winner was the SHOWWX Laser Pico Projector by Microvision that was playfully demoed by Dr. Evil that uses lasers instead of LEDs, fluorescent or incandescent lights and fits in a pocket or purse.
The session one-on-one with the FCC chairman Julius Genachowski and CEA's Shapiro talked about broadband, spectrum, innovation and ethics. Genachowski announced that the national broadband plan, expected out this March, would be a living, breathing strategic plan for our country, and noted the U.S. is currently experiencing a "limited spectrum crisis."
Other compelling conference programs focused on the top issues for the entertainment community, which featured prominent content professionals debating and discussing the best ways to monetize digital content, 3D for the home, over-the-top services and mobile distribution and other relevant issues for the entertainment industry.
Every corner you turned a new product, gadget, or invention was being launched. CES 2011 is already in the works and ETA will be represented!
